EASTMAN — A Dodge County jury returned a guilty verdict Thursday in a murder case that made headlines last summer, according to Tim Vaughn, District Attorney for the Oconee Judicial Circuit.

Janet Ray, 53, of 2178 Lower River Road, Eastman, was convicted of murder and concealing a death for the July 2006 murder of her husband, Russell Ray. She received a sentence of life in prison plus five years.

“I’m pleased that the jury saw the facts as I did and convicted her,” said Vaughn.

Russell Ray’s remains were found stuffed inside a trash can behind his home on July 19 of last year, after a search was instigated because of concerns voiced by an associate and family member. Janet Ray initially told investigators that her husband was away on a fishing trip.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Eastman Police Department all worked together on the investigation into Russell Ray’s disappearance and Janet Ray’s arrest and conviction. Judge Phillip West presided at the trial.

“The judge gave her a good sentence,” said Vaughn
